Executive Overview

Tree Detection & Localization is a production-grade aerial intelligence pipeline designed to automate forest resource inventory, canopy density tracking, and vegetation monitoring. By processing high-resolution drone orthomosaics, the system detects individual tree crowns, classifies tree species, segments foliage boundaries, and projects pixel-level centroids into real-world geographic coordinates.

The Challenge & Solution

Challenge: Aerial drone imagery suffers from severe illumination variance, shadow occlusions, overlapping tree crowns in dense forests, and massive image tile dimensions. Manual forestry surveying takes weeks, is labor-intensive, and prone to human counting error.

Engineered Solution: Engineered an automated end-to-end Python pipeline centered on YOLOv8 instance segmentation. Added an automated preprocessing tile-slicer to handle gigapixel drone images without downsampling loss, integrated automated EXIF and image quality validation, and converted bounding mask coordinates into georeferenced GeoJSON assets.

Technical Pipeline Breakdown

How data flows through the system from raw ingestion to production insights

01

Automated Image Ingestion & Tile Slicing

High-resolution drone orthomosaics are sliced into sliding-window patches with configurable overlap. Validates EXIF metadata, channel counts, and contrast levels before model ingestion.

02

YOLOv8 Instance Segmentation

Trained YOLOv8 model predicts bounding boxes, confidence scores, and polygonal segmentation masks for tree crowns across diverse foliage conditions.

03

Spatial Georeferencing & Deduplication

Transforms local tile pixel centroids into UTM/WGS84 geospatial coordinates. Non-Maximum Suppression (NMS) across overlapping tile boundaries removes duplicate canopy detections.

04

Automated Reporting & GIS Export

Generates structured summary reports, GeoJSON spatial shapefiles, and tabular manifests for forest management platforms and environmental compliance.
